THE MISSOURI IS ON FIRE!

4-28-23 MO 001The Missouri River is fishing great right now.  If you present it right, the fish will take it.  Water temperatures are about 43 or 44 degrees.  Lots and Lots of fish in the Missouri River.  Rainbow Czech, Amex, Lightning bugs, juju midge, zebra midge, and sow bugs will do the trick.  Midges throughout the morning and BWO’s showing up about 12 noon daily.  The wind has been pretty tough to compete with.  If the wind wasn’t howling, the dry fly game would be on.  Bill and Doug smack them pretty good the last two days on the Missouri.  Great drifts are rewarded with great fish.  Soft runs are holding lots of fish!  Make the drift and set 4-28-23 MO 003the hook.  Thanks Bill and Doug for the trip! 406-253-8408

Persistence is the Key! The Grace’s push the limits of the Missouri!

4-25-13 MO 001Lots of nice fish today on the Missouri!  Whether you are nymphing or streamer fishing, persistence is the key.  A bit of wind today and sun made fishing a little tougher.  Nymphing was good in the fish holding runs.  Soft tail-outs, ledges or just ask yourself (is this good holding water for trout to lay in and feed?)  Rainbow Czech, juju baetis, j4-24-13 MO 003uju midge, zebra midge, disco midge, lightning bugs, PT’s etc. will do the trick.  You will be rewarded if you stick with the streamer game.  What worked for us was the clouser minnows (both the white and chartreuse, and foxee red) sex dungeons, sculpin patterns and leech patterns.  The foxee red clouser this afternoon came on fire.  Browns murdering your streamer is a great feeling.  Get out and enjoy the “Mighty Mo’.  406-253-8408

A LITTLE TOUGHER TODAY WITH THE SUN AND WIND

4-24-13 MO 001Fishing was still good today on the Missouri.  The bright sun and a little bit of wind to compete with made things a little tougher.  Thatss O.K. I’m always looking for a challenge.  Lightning bugs, Czech nymphs, midges with get you into the game.  The streamer bite was hit and miss.  White was key today!  Nymphing success was in soft tail-outs.  Looking forward to the weekend with increasing temperatures and hopefully less wind.

Nymphs, Streamers, and Dry Flies!

4-23-13 MO 004What a great day on the world famous Missouri River.  Today we were able to experience all 3 types of fishing with success (nymph, streamer, and dry fly).  Floated Dearborn to Prewitt today and the river is on fire.  Purple, Silver, and Gold lightning bugs in a size 18 did the trick for us with a midge dropper of your choice (Zebra, JuJu, Disco, etc).  Caught some nice browns today with a Skidish Smolt, Clouser Minnow, and dark leech patterns.  The BWO’s started coming off about noon.  Found some nice pods of fish willing to take a cripple pattern or a emerger.  The Missouri is fishing great.  You just can’t beat the dry fly fishing on the MO.  Make sure you take advantage of the “Spring Special”.  $300 Fullday everything is included!  406-253-8408

Missouri River Fly Fishing Report

I floated Dearborn to MT. Palace today with Aaron.  The fishing was great on the Missouri River.  By 1 O’clock the Baetis were out in full force.  It’s just nice to see a upright wings mixed with midges that have been consuming our winter fly fishing.  For us the purple lightning bug with a zeb4-19-13 MO 002ra midge dropper produced all day.  I would give the streamer bite a B-.  Aaron did smoke one nice brown at the Mid Canon Islands.  A few takes here and there on the streamer.  Slumpbusters, bouface, clouser minnows, gonga, and sex dungeons were in the mix.  It’s tough to beat a olive leach pattern.  Soft water was key with our nymphs.  Keep the flies in the water and keep mending.  Longer drifts produce more fish.  Also, I took note of a few skwala’s by MT. Palace.  They will produce.  Overall, the Missouri River is fishing great.  Whether you want to nymph or throw streamers, persistence will put fish in the boat.  There was enough top water action as well for the Dry Fly Gang!  Thanks for the trip Aaron!

KINDA A MIDGE/LIGHTNING BUG KINDA OF A DAY!

4-16-13 003Montana always teases you in the spring time.  It’s gets nice and everyone gets excited about the weather outside.  Then old man winter shows up and puts a damper on things.  Today was a great day to tie up a bunch of midges and lightning bugs.  For the Missouri its nice to have a endless supply of these bugs.  I got my new phone yesterday (a IPhone4)  and can’t be more pleased.  My wife told me to download the Pandora app and when it comes to fly tying you couldn’t ask for better music.  In my case, I type in Guns and Roses and bam, I start listening to “Sweet Child of Mine.  Next song is Metallica “One” followed by Lynard Synard “Sweet Home Alabama”.  You should try listening to Pandora the next time you tie up a batch of flies.  It’s a great way to enhance the day when you wish you were out on the water.  Can’t wait to be out chasing trout on midges and baetis!

Fishing Report: April 8th, 2013 “Mission Pike”

By Fishing Report

I thought that I would report todayPike Stuff 003 on my latest obsession on “fly fishing for pike”.  I can honestly tell you that I don’t know were this came from, but a couple months back I saw a few video’s of anglers fly fishing for pike.  Catching a 40 inch plus fish on a fly seems like a pretty fun thing to do.  The best thing for me while fishing is seeing “the take”.  A week and a half ago I fished the Madison and saw some great takes on my streamer.  I’m already dreaming of the spring and summer days of 20 inch fish on the might Mo taking dries!  My mission in the next month and a half will be to catch a 40 inch plus pike while sight fishing for them!  I just finished a book called “Mastering Pike on the Fly” by Barry Reynolds.  Its a great book on how Barry approaches his pike adventures.  So, today I started tying pike flies that I hope will entice a huge pike.  If anything, with crappy weather outside, it keeps a fly fisherman focused on fly fishing and something new.  Pike Stuff 004

Yellowstone-Armstrong Spring Creek-MadisonYellowstone-Arm-Madison 001

I ventured out to the Bozeman area Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  The Yellowstone, Armstrong Spring Creek and the Madison were on the menu.  I had an absolute blast in Big Sky Country!  On the Yellowstone, I floated Pine Creek to Carter’s Bridge and picked up some nice browns on leech patterns.  The Kiwi Muddler minnow worked on all three of these great fisheries by the way.  The key for us was the soft tail-outs of major runs.  I really slowed down my retrieve.  I had never fished the spring creeks in Paradise Valley but I absolutely fell in love with Armstrong Creek.  Lots of midges with a few baetis.  The fish were extremely selective.  CDC hanging midge with a jujuYellowstone-Arm-Madison 003 midge dropper worked best for me.  Nothing to big but I will take a 14 inch selective brown on a spring creek any day!  The Madison was great today.  I had great success on a Olive Sex Dungeon and a Yellow Zoo Cougar.  Lou of course threw his Kiwi Muddler minnow and landed a 20 inch brown.  We had a bit more luck in the canyon at the warm springs put in but had enough takes in the lower river to keep things interesting.  Getting quite a few bookings for the spring special on the Missouri.  $300 for a full-day is pretty tough to beat.  Fishing is really heating up in Montana.  Take advantage of God’s great creation-I know he wants me to take advantage of it!Yellowstone-Arm-Madison 006
